Search for this and you'll find day-rate averages ranging from a few hundred pounds to well over a thousand, all presented as if there's one true number. There isn't. A fractional marketing director's rate is driven by a small number of specific factors, and understanding them tells you far more than any average would.
What actually moves the price
Seniority and track record. Someone who has owned a genuinely large budget or led marketing through a specific commercial outcome commands a different rate than someone earlier in a fractional career, regardless of title.
Days per week. One day a week and three days a week aren't the same relationship at a different price — the lower-frequency engagement often costs more per day, since it has to be valuable enough to justify limited availability.
What's actually being fixed. A focused, well-defined problem (a tracking audit, a specific campaign) prices differently from open-ended, ongoing strategic ownership of the whole function.
Fractional versus interim. Interim work is full-time and dedicated to one business; fractional is part-time, shared across clients. The commitment shape changes the economics on both sides.
The comparison that actually matters
Day rate against annual salary is the wrong comparison. The fairer one is total cost against the problem being solved: a full-time hire brings salary, National Insurance, benefits, onboarding time and the risk of a mismatched hire. An agency brings a retainer plus media spend, and executes what it's briefed rather than owning the outcome. Fractional or interim work is priced against the actual gap, not a generic headcount cost.
Why I don't publish a single day rate
Every fractional marketing director who publishes one number is publishing an average that won't actually apply to your specific situation — the honest range is wide enough that a single figure is more marketing than information. What I can tell you concretely is scoped to what you actually need, which is what the discovery call is for. Full detail on how engagements are structured is on the services page.
If you'd rather see this compared side by side first, the services page has a direct comparison table against a full-time hire, an agency, and a recruiter placement.
