LEGO has an unusually broad audience and catalogue. Public gift routes allow people to browse by age, audience and interest, while LEGO Insiders adds rewards and participation. The outside-in challenge is not lack of choice. It is helping an occasional buyer feel certain that one set is right.
The wider lesson
A large range needs decision support, not only more ways to filter it.
Observed 01
Gift discovery supports several mental models
The public shop offers routes for little ones, older children and adults, alongside themes, interests and price points. That reflects the different ways buyers think about a gift.
Observed 02
Some category routes still contain extensive choice
Age and adult category pages can contain large product sets. Filters narrow the catalogue, but the buyer still has to judge interest, difficulty, display value and occasion.
Possible implication
Choice confidence may matter more than catalogue access
A parent or enthusiast may enjoy exploring. An occasional gift buyer may want reassurance that the set fits the recipient, budget and desired type of experience.
Alternative explanation
A credible reason the signal may be benign
Search, recommendation modules and logged-in LEGO Insiders data may already personalise discovery effectively. Public category pages do not show every recommendation state.
The smallest useful test
Learn before committing to a larger fix
Test a three-question gift route covering recipient, preferred experience and budget. Give a shortlist of three sets with a plain-English reason for each recommendation.
What I would check internally
- Which filters reduce time to purchase for occasional gift buyers?
- Where do customers move repeatedly between age, theme and interest routes?
- Does a small recommended shortlist improve confidence without reducing basket value?
- Can LEGO Insiders add useful context without forcing account creation too early?
Public sources checked
Correction policy: public pages change. If a source has moved or the context is incomplete, email hello@faisalconsulting.co.uk and I will review it.
